Wirtschaft Russlands
In short
The Russian economy remains heavily reliant on energy exports, having supplied over $321 billion in oil and gas to the EU since 2022 despite ongoing Western sanctions. The system is currently under intense pressure from large-scale EU sanctions targeting nearly 1,600 individuals and companies.
In plain words
Russia makes much of its money by selling oil and gas to other countries. Even though many Western nations have tried to stop buying these goods, huge amounts of energy are still being sent to Europe. At the same time, many Russian businesses and people are being punished with trade bans.
A simple example
A European company continues to buy natural gas from Russia to heat homes, even though the EU has placed sanctions on many other Russian firms.
Why it matters
Energy exports provide the funds that support the Russian state and its military actions. The tension between these massive energy trades and strict international sanctions creates significant instability in global markets.
Easy to mix up
Do not confuse the Russian economy with the Russian military; while they are linked, one refers to money and trade, while the other refers to armed forces.
