Serie A
In short
The top professional football league in Italy, featuring the country's most successful clubs in a national round-robin competition.
In plain words
It is the highest level of Italian football. Teams play each other to earn points, and the best teams win the title while the worst ones move down to a lower league.
A simple example
A club like Juventus or AC Milan plays matches against other Italian teams throughout the season to try and finish at the top of the table.
Why it matters
It is one of the most prestigious football leagues in the world. It determines which Italian clubs qualify for major European tournaments like the Champions League.
Easy to mix up
Do not confuse it with the Coppa Italia, which is a knockout cup competition rather than a league format.
