Orange Order
In short
The Orange Order is a Protestant fraternal organisation based in Northern Ireland that focuses on defending the Reformed faith and the British monarchy.
In plain words
It is a group of Protestant people who meet in local branches called lodges. They hold parades and ceremonies to celebrate their religious and political traditions.
A simple example
Members often march in large parades through streets in Northern Ireland to mark historical Protestant victories.
Why it matters
The group plays a significant role in the cultural and political identity of Ulster Protestants. Its parades can sometimes cause tension within divided communities.
Easy to mix up
Do not confuse it with the Orange Party, which is a political party in other countries.
