Nota Fiscal Mei
In short
The Nota Fiscal MEI is a tax document used by individual micro-entrepreneurs in Brazil, which will see significant changes starting in 2027. New regulations will allow these entrepreneurs to use their annual declaration as a fiscal document for sales to individual consumers.
In plain words
It is a receipt that proves a business sale happened. From 2027, MEIs will not always need to issue a separate note for regular people. However, many businesses must now use the new National Issuer system for services.
A simple example
A hairdresser working as a MEI currently issues a digital note for every client. After the 2027 change, they may use their annual tax report to cover sales made to private individuals.
Why it matters
These changes aim to reduce paperwork for small business owners. It also forces companies under the Simples Nacional regime to standardise their service notes through a single national system.
Easy to mix up
Do not confuse the MEI rules with the new mandatory National Issuer requirements for larger Micro-enterprises (ME) and Small Business Enterprises (EPP).
