Moab
In short
Moab was an ancient Levantine kingdom situated east of the Dead Sea in what is now southern Jordan. Its territory was characterised by mountainous terrain along the eastern shore.
In plain words
It was a country that existed a long time ago in the Middle East. Most of its land is part of modern-day Jordan. People lived in a capital city called Dibon.
A simple example
Archaeologists found the Mesha Stele, an ancient stone slab, which records a victory by the Moabite king over an Israelite ruler.
Why it matters
It provides important historical evidence about early kingdoms in the Levant. The findings help historians understand the conflicts between ancient Israel and its neighbours.
Easy to mix up
Do not confuse the ancient kingdom of Moab with the modern Moab National Park located in Utah, USA.
