Inundacion
In short
The Inundation of Walcheren was a military action during World War II where Allied forces bombed sea dikes to flood the island of Walcheren. This was done to disrupt German defences during the Battle of the Scheldt in October 1944.
In plain words
Soldiers broke through sea walls to let seawater cover the land. This made it very difficult for the enemy to move around. However, it also caused massive damage to local homes and nature.
A simple example
By breaching the dikes, the Allies turned parts of the island into shallow lakes. This forced German troops to stay on higher ground where they could be targeted more easily.
Why it matters
It shows how military tactics can have unintended consequences for civilians and the environment. The flooding caused long-term damage to the local ecology and infrastructure.
Easy to mix up
Do not confuse this intentional military flooding with a natural flood caused by heavy rain or rising sea levels.
