In plain words
He was a famous movie star from Australia who could play many different types of characters. He was especially good at making people believe he was someone else entirely. He is remembered as one of the greatest actors of his generation.
A simple example
In the film The Dark Knight, he played a chaotic villain named the Joker. He used makeup, voice, and movement to create a character that felt completely real and terrifying.
Why it matters
His ability to disappear into roles set a new standard for acting in modern cinema. His sudden death in 2008 was a major loss to the film industry and left a lasting impact on his fans and peers.
Easy to mix up
Do not confuse him with his contemporary actor Joaquin Phoenix, who also played the Joker in a later film.
