Ftse 250
In short
The FTSE 250 is a British stock market index containing the 250 mid-sized companies listed on the London Stock Exchange.
In plain words
It tracks the performance of medium-sized businesses in the UK. These companies are larger than small startups but smaller than the giants found in the FTSE 100.
A simple example
If a large UK retail chain grows significantly but is not yet a global giant, it might move from the FTSE SmallCap index into the FTSE 250.
Why it matters
It is often seen as a barometer for the health of the UK domestic economy. Because these firms mostly operate within Britain, their success reflects local consumer spending and business conditions.
Easy to mix up
Do not confuse it with the FTSE 100, which consists of the largest companies that often earn most of their money abroad.
