Europa League
In short
An annual European club football tournament organised by UEFA for top-performing teams that did not qualify for the Champions League.
In plain words
It is a major football competition for clubs across Europe. Teams play matches to try and win the trophy. It sits just below the Champions League in importance.
A simple example
A club like Manchester United or Sevilla might play in this tournament to compete for a European title. Winning it also allows them to qualify for next year's Champions League.
Why it matters
It provides huge prestige and prize money for clubs. It also offers a pathway for mid-sized teams to prove themselves on a continental stage.
Easy to mix up
Do not confuse it with the UEFA Champions League, which is the top-tier competition for the very best clubs.
