Europa Conference League
In short
The third-tier annual football tournament for European clubs organised by UEFA. It sits below the Champions League and the Europa League in the hierarchy of European club competitions.
In plain words
This is a big football contest for teams from across Europe. It gives smaller clubs a chance to play in international matches and win a trophy. It started in 2021 to give more teams a shot at European glory.
A simple example
A mid-table team from the English Premier League might play against a club from Greece or Turkey in this tournament.
Why it matters
It provides more competitive matches for clubs that do not qualify for the top two European leagues. Winning the tournament also offers a pathway into next season's Europa League.
Easy to mix up
Do not confuse it with the UEFA Europa League, which is the higher-ranking second-tier competition.
