Cnc
In short
Computer numerical control is the automated use of computers to direct the movement of machine tools. It allows machines to follow precise instructions to cut, shape, or drill materials with high accuracy.
In plain words
Instead of a person moving handles manually, a computer sends digital commands to the machine. This makes manufacturing much faster and more consistent. It uses pre-written code to tell the tools exactly where to go.
A simple example
A designer creates a 3D model of a metal part on a computer. The CNC machine reads this file and automatically carves the part out of a solid block of aluminium.
Why it matters
It enables the mass production of complex parts that would be impossible to make by hand. This technology is essential for modern industries like aerospace, car manufacturing, and medical device production.
Easy to mix up
Do not confuse CNC with NC (Numerical Control), which uses physical media like punched tape instead of a computer program.
