Burmese Python
In short
A massive, non-venomous constrictor snake native to Southeast Asia. It is currently recognised as a distinct species and is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.
In plain words
This is one of the biggest snakes in the world. It hunts by wrapping its body around prey and squeezing. While it belongs in Asia, it has become a major problem in Florida after escaping from pet owners.
A simple example
A Burmese python might swallow a large mammal, such as a deer, whole after squeezing it to stop its heart.
Why it matters
They are a key part of Asian ecosystems, but they cause ecological damage in places like the Florida Everglades. In these new areas, they kill off local wildlife and upset the natural balance.
Easy to mix up
Do not confuse them with the Indian python, which was once thought to be the same species.
