Brasileirao Serie A
In short
The top tier of the Brazilian football league system featuring the country's most successful professional clubs. It operates on a promotion and relegation model with teams competing for the national championship title.
In plain words
It is the highest level of football in Brazil. The best teams play each other in a long season to see who is the champion. The bottom teams move down to a lower league next year.
A simple example
Flamengo and Palmeiras compete against each other in this league to win the trophy. If a team finishes last, they are demoted to Serie B.
Why it matters
It is one of the most competitive leagues in the world and produces many global superstars. The results determine which Brazilian clubs qualify for international tournaments like the Copa Libertadores.
Easy to mix up
Do not confuse it with the Copa Libertadores, which is a continental tournament involving teams from many different South American countries.
