In short
The Big Bash League is Australia's premier professional Twenty20 cricket competition.
In plain words
It is a fast-paced cricket tournament played in the evenings. Teams from different Australian cities compete in short matches that usually last about three hours.
A simple example
A batsman hits a ball over the boundary rope to score six runs in a single delivery. This helps his team reach their target quickly.
Why it matters
It brings high-energy cricket to large crowds and helps grow the sport's popularity. The league also provides a major platform for young players to showcase their skills.
Easy to mix up
Do not confuse it with the Indian Premier League (IPL), which is a different T20 competition based in India.
