Balon De Oro
In short
The Ballon d'Or is an annual football award given to the best players in the world. It is organised by France Football magazine.
In plain words
Every year, experts and journalists vote for the most talented footballer. The winner receives a golden trophy to show they were the best performer of the season.
A simple example
Lionel Messi has won the trophy multiple times due to his incredible skill and goal scoring.
Why it matters
It is considered one of the highest individual honours in sports. Winning it cements a player's legacy as a legend of the game.
Easy to mix up
Do not confuse it with the Mexican Balón de Oro, which only honours players in the Liga MX.
