Athletic Bilbao
In short
Athletic Bilbao is a professional football club based in Bilbao, Spain, that competes in La Liga. The team is famous for its unique policy of only signing players with Basque heritage.
In plain words
This is a Spanish football team from the Basque Country. Unlike most clubs, they only recruit players born in or trained in the local region. They play their home games at the San Mamés Stadium.
A simple example
If a world-class player is born in Madrid, Athletic Bilbao will not sign them, even if they have the money to do so.
Why it matters
Their recruitment policy preserves local identity and creates a deep bond between the squad and the community. It makes them one of the most distinctive and culturally significant clubs in world football.
Easy to mix up
Do not confuse them with Real Sociedad, which is another major club from the same Basque region.
