Aktie
In short
A share represents a unit of ownership in a corporation or joint-stock company. Holding an aktie gives an investor a claim on part of the company's assets and earnings.
In plain words
When you buy an aktie, you become a part-owner of a business. If the company makes a profit, you might receive a portion of that money. You can often sell your ownership to others on a stock market.
A simple example
If a company issues 100 shares and you buy 10, you own 10% of that business. You would then be entitled to 10% of any dividends paid out to shareholders.
Why it matters
It allows companies to raise large amounts of money by selling pieces of themselves to the public. For individuals, it is a primary way to build wealth through capital growth and dividends.
Easy to mix up
Do not confuse an aktie with a bond, which is a loan you make to a company rather than an ownership stake.
