In short
Several major drone breaches have occurred in Romanian airspace and territorial waters throughout 2026. These incidents include a Russian UAV crashing into a residential building in Galați and a Ukrainian naval drone exploding in the Port of Constanța.
In plain words
Unmanned aircraft from the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine have flown into Romanian territory. This has caused damage to buildings and explosions in ports. It marks a significant increase in airspace violations by combatant drones.
A simple example
A Russian drone crashed into a home in the city of Galați, causing local damage. Separately, a naval drone from Ukraine exploded while in the Port of Constanța.
Why it matters
These incidents show how the war in Ukraine directly affects the safety of neighbouring NATO members. They force Romania to increase its air defence and monitor its borders more closely.
Easy to mix up
Do not confuse these accidental or stray drone incursions with intentional Romanian military drone operations.
